A darling black rabbit with just a hint of white markings had a terrible accident in early December and now this young bunny with a broken leg could use your help.
Tango, a six-month-old Dutch Dwarf, suffered a broken leg and ankle when one of his rear legs somehow got trapped behind his hay rack. The injury happened right in his pen and was a freak accident.
According to The Rabbit Haven, “All attempts were being made to save Tango’s leg and to repair the damaged leg to offer him full mobility.” Local veterinarian and surgeon Dr. Sarah Hawklyn (Aptos-Creekside Pet Hospital) and specialist Dr. Greg Marsolais (Pacific Veterinary Specialists) have both operated on Tango’s leg.
Dr. Marsolais discovered that Tango’s tiny leg bones were severely damaged from the fracture. He “worked to straighten the tibia spiral fracture and also needed to wire his ankle separately“ said Haven founder, Heather Betchel. Tango requires weekly splint changes and an X-ray is planned soon to assess the leg’s healing. He is in the best of care with The Rabbit Haven.
Tango’s foster mom, Karen, states that he is “eating, drinking and eliminating well…enjoying his alfalfa hay and spring mix greens...Oxbow treats and also an occasional slice of apple or banana.” Tango “looks forward to his 'out' time when he can stretch a little bit and explore the bed or the couch with close supervision. He moves about a bit then comes back to me for snuggles.”
Tango’s surgeries and medication costs were estimated at between $1500 and $2000, but expected to rise with additional care (there is no charge for the extraordinary care provided by Karen, a loyal Haven volunteer). Tango's Appeal can be viewed in its entirety on their website where you can watch for progress updates too.
