At a press conference held at a Paris hotel yesterday, Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux unveiled the lineup for the 63rd Festival de Cannes, slated for May 12-23rd this year in the popular South of France beach town.
Woody Allen’s latest – the London-set You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger – was included in the “out of competition” films announced, as was Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel Money Never Sleeps. Fremaux noted he had asked Allen if Tall Dark Stranger could screen in the main selection, but the competition-shy director refused the request.
The festival opener – the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood – has been in place for a couple of weeks, screening there two days before its official wide release on May 14.
One U.S. film that will be playing in competition is Fair Game, a thriller from director Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) about the Joe Wilson-Valerie Plame incident and starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. The Los Angeles Times offers a comprehensive look at all 16 films slated thus far for the competition.
Naomi Watts is also featured in Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, along with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire). A rather vague description offers the film revolves around “the members of a family, their tangled love lives and their attempts to solve their problems.” Couldn’t that be said about pretty much every Woody Allen film?
American director Tim Burton will head the international jury that will select the Palme d'Or laureate, and he will be joined by actresses Kate Beckinsale and Giovanna Mezzogiorno, actor Benicio Del Toro, directors Shekhar Kapur and Victor Erice, writer-director Emmanuel Carrere and the director of Italy's National Cinema Museum, Alberto Barbera.

I hope Woody Allen isn't the "tall, dark, stranger".
They have an impressive list of films. Too bad 'You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger' is out of competition.
Sounds like a good lineup this year.
Cute! Good catch phrase.
