We think you're near Los Angeles

You've come a long way, baby: Eddie's of Mt. Vernon

Eddie's of Mt.Vernon -- at 7 W. Eager St. -- has been a neighborhood grocery store in Baltimore since 1988. We both came to Mt. Vernon at the same time, pretty much. When I first moved there and shopped at the store, it was . . . how can I put it? Pathetic. But, credit where credit is due! This store has become a gem of the Mt. Vernon community.

Their deli section was a base that allowed it to grow as the community became, quite frankly, much wealthier. Hands down, their rare roast beef sub is the best in the city.

They added to their prepared foods and some of the salads -- like the carrot salad that's occasionally there -- are quite tasty.

Eventually came a salad bar, a coffee bar, a 6 day license liquor store (7 days during the holidays), pasta from Vellegia's and maybe most importantly, produce from local farms like Burton's and Baughers. You can even get the often difficult to obtain Dangerously Delicious Pies, gourmet cheeses, and even prepared Cornish game hens.
