A Daily Word from the Word for Thursday, February 13, 2014

“You are my portion, O Lord.” –Psalm 119:57

When the Psalmist was calling God his portion, he was using the Hebrew word cheleq (pr. khay-lek) which is “an allotment, inheritance, smooth stones used to cast lots” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Throughout the Old and the New Testaments, there were multiple instances of God’s people casting lots. Casting lots is Biblical, as it was something that God allowed in order for His Will to be determined in a given situation. The Israelites did it many times, the sailors whose ship Jonah was on to determine who brought God’s wrath upon them cast lots, as did the apostles to choose a replacement for Judas, just to give a few examples.

It is extremely important to note that God does not condone devices such as crystal balls, ouija boards, eight balls, soothsayers, or anything along this line which is based in witchcraft and of the devil. The process of casting lots was ordained by God and done with specific stones which were held close to the chest of a god-fearing individual and was done with a heart toward God, seeking God’s Will and with much prayer.

I was as surprised as you probably are seeing that this reference is used to identify God! However, after researching the significance and purpose of casting lots, it is a wonderful illustration of God, our Way Maker, God our Navigator! This is our God who orders our steps and makes our crooked paths straight! (Psalm 119:133, Isaiah 45:2). God is our guide, and our decision-maker. He is the God of whom Deuteronomy 4:29 asserts “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” When we seek God with all of our hearts, we will find Him, and in finding God, we have “stood in the ways and seen, and have asked for the old paths, where the good way is, and have walked in it; and have found rest for our souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).

God is also referred to as a smooth stone. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, one of the definitions of smooth is “being a representative of a function with a continuous first derivative.” God is the First, The Original, the One-and-Only Authentic Being, in which every good thing is derived from! God is God alone! (Psalm 86:10). My brothers and sisters, this is something to get excited about! God our Uncreated, Unchanging, Unstoppable, Always-reliable, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent Original from which every good thing, including us was derived from! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1-3). God is our “Yes!” and our “Amen!” (2 Corinthians 1:20).

God is our inheritance! In this world we live in, everyone wants to inherit something, which is completely understandable and acceptable! We want to inherit from our parents and we want to leave an inheritance to our children. Do you know that we have the greatest inheritance ever bequeathed to any person ever, even from the beginning of time to the end of the world?! God is our Inheritance! And we don’t have to worry about there being enough for us or enough to go around after all the cousins, and third cousins twice removed, step-children, long lost relatives that we haven’t heard a peep out of until now stake their claim; because God is more than enough! There is more-than-enough God for every legitimate heir of His! And the coolest thing ever is we get to enjoy our inheritance with The One who gave Himself to us!

Let us take a moment and truly meditate on (to the best of our ability with our finite minds) who God is as our Portion. And as we begin to feel the anointing of the Father draw us in, let us give thanks to the One who made Himself more than enough for you and for me.

Father, thank You that You are our Portion. Thank You that You are our Way-Maker. We turn every decision over to You Father, for You are our Lot and our Compass. We cast every care upon You, Most Capable Load-Bearer. We thank You for directing our paths and making our crooked paths straight. We thank You for guiding our every step and decision. We thank you that you are our Inheritance, and you are more than enough for all of your children. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we and our lives are in your Most Holy, Loving, and Capable Hands. Amen and Amen.

Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to allow the Lord, Your Portion, to guide you. Choose to submit to your Perfect Father’s leading. Resist giving in to your flesh, emotions, or will for guidance, as these navigation systems are faulty and will lead you down a dead end or in a ditch! And continue to fight the good fight of choosing the Ancient Paths—the good way! For God, your Smooth Stone, has already given you the victory!

If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
