Most people, when they think of Filippo's, think of pizza.
It's understandable, as they have an excellent doughy medium thin crust (not cracker crust) pizza, with great toppings. The pepperoni is good, but could be spicier, and the Italian sausage has excellent flavor.
However, it behooves the lover of Italian food to come here for some of their classic dishes.
Be forewarned: Ignore the cheesy decor and be prepared for slow, uneven service. Sometimes it's great; other times...not so much.
Start with appetizers. The Scungilli Conch is served hot or cold, and it's hard to decide which is better. The cold is wonderfully marinated, but the hot is swimming in garlic butter and just melts in your mouth.
If the Italian sausage soup is on the day's menu - order it. It's a hearty soup with large chunks of their Italian sausage.
The Gnocchi with garlic butter sauce is some of the best around. If you're in the mood for seafood, try the Mussels Marinara over Linguini, or even more enticing, the Scamponi (shrimp) , which are large and firm. They also have several fish dishes available, and a good fish fry.
If you're in the mood for a sandwich, you can't get better than the meatball. Large meatballs smothered in their homemade sauce on a large, hearty roll. There's enough for two meals.
If you can't decide, the best deal is a Filippo's Combination - you can choose any three items for $17.50. Choices include Veal, Chicken or Eggplant Parmigiana, Lasagna, Scamponi, Sicilian Steak, Pork Spiedini, Fettucine Alfredo, Manicotti, Cannelloni and Beef Spiedini.
Desserts include homemade Cannoli and Black Forest Cheesecake.
There is a full bar available, and Black Bear sodas are the brand of choice.

Thank you, Christin! Filippo's sounds delicious!
Christin, we just ate there with out of state family and they said they had nothing this good back home. Great review for a great place. Their Italian tomato soup should also be highly recommended.
This is the quintessential little neighborhood Italian joint. Perfect for an inexpensive night out.
I smell a trip there in my future, SOON!
