Hopefully the perspectives presented over these past few months convinced you that you are valued consumers of the educational system, not contestants hoping to be selected to participate. What would happen to colleges and universities if all of you decide that the institutions of higher learning are anachronistic, systems that have existed beyond their relevance in their current formats? As an admissions candidate you have all the power. How are they convincing you to come? You are their valuable customers.
If athletes fail to present in the fall what happens to the billions of dollars earned by college sports entertainment industries including the portions delivered by the colleges? Who will engage in all of the research if undergraduate and graduate students do not present to their science and engineering laboratories? Who will bring the next generation of art, music and other underpinnings of cultural aesthetics to the world if budding artisans, logicians, philosophers and theologians stay home?
Will professors work alone in their offices and labs? Will lecturers speak in empty halls? Will library staff read the books themselves while the sports administration play pick up games? If you look closely you will probably find a significant amount of administrative bickering amongst the staff at the colleges in which you are interested. They cannot agree upon their relative importance to the institutions. However, they can all agree that you as students are most relevant for assuring the persistence of their institutions and jobs, no matter how they actually treat you.
Are the colleges in which you are interested recruiting you as if you are a celebrity? Are they offering you more money than you can count? Are they doing their best to assure that your health, safety, and welfare will not be compromised while attending their school? Are they offering a guarantee that you will graduate and move effectively into graduate school or the job market in four years or fewer? If not, then why should you be interested in them?
You have been a great student and engaged in all of the right complementary activities. So, you need no more instruction. You are their valuable customers and hopefully they remember it. Success to you next year.
