Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial day to fallen Israel Defense Forces soldiers and victims of terrorism, was observed yesterday evening in Overland Park at the Lewis and Shirley White Theatre at the Jewish Community Campus.
The program was sponsored by the Israeli Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City. and included readings of letters from soldiers killed in the line of duty to their loved ones, video tributes, prayers, and the singing of Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem.
In Israel Yom HaZikaron was observed last night and today. Sirens were sounded throughout the country as part of the observance. As the sirens sounded, movement and even traffic in the country came to a standstill as people stood at attention to pay their respects to those who have died to defend Israel.
When the somber day ends, the festivities associated with Israel's 62nd Independence Day begins.
