Yoko Ono backs fight to keep children's center open at John Lennon's old school

March 14, 2011 - Liverpool, England -  Yoko Ono will support the fight to keep the children’s center called "Sure Start Center" at Dovedale Infant School open. Her husband John Lennon attended Dovedale School in Mossley Hill in Liverpool as a child. Yoko has long been a supporter of the school and has made occasional visits. During a previous visit I made to Liverpool, tour guides pointed out the new "crayon" sculptures in the playground that Yoko had donated, as well as murals with John's picture in them.

Yoko visited  recently in September of 2010 to celebrate the opening of the Sure Start Center that she had helped open, and then paid an emotional visit to Mendips, where John grew up with his Aunt Mimi. She was commemortating Lennon's 70th birthday at the same time. (Read here and see photos.)

According to the Liverpool Echo today,  government spending cuts are threatening the school program which operates as a community center for families and children. Parents interviewed said they were thrilled that Yoko "could use her international fame to shine a light on their battle."

Yoko told the ECHO: "I was very very happy to open the centre at Dovedale and to know how much it is loved and well used by the parents and the children. I strongly support the campaign to keep the centre open."

She also sent a heart-warming message of support to the parents and children at the centre, adding: "When I visited you, all of you gave me a big smile.

"I will never forget that day. We are family. I love you, Yoko."
