Yoga reveals greater benefits

Research study compares yoga to exercise

There have been a great number of studies demonstrating yoga’s short-term physical and psychological benefits.

Research has been presented today, at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports and Sports Medicine and 2nd World Congress on Exercise is Medicine®. This study had examined how long-term practitioners of yoga compare to habitual exercisers.

Researchers at The George Washington University in the School of Public Health Services, led by Brittanie DeChino, graduate student and instructor, had surveyed 163 participants. Participants had been recruited from yoga studios and fitness club in the Washington, D.C. area.

Researcher’s survey of participants was on the psychological well-being. Measurements were taken by depression, anxiety, coping, perceived stress, mindfulness and general health symptoms.

Professor DeChino remarks that both groups (yoga and exercise) were alike in respect to self reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yoga practitioners did report lower frequency of joint pain and headaches, in comparison to those who practiced cardiovascular exercises and weight training. The yoga group also showed higher scores in mindfulness and coping skills. They also had lower scores in perceived stress in comparison to the exercise group.

According to Professor DeChino, the lasting and specific benefits of yoga to mindfulness and consistent stress reduction should be stressed in community-based health promotion strategies.
