Back to school time means more reading, writing and concentrating on grades and extra-curricular activities.
More than ever, students are required to keep up with sports and studies for future success, and, in turn increasingly complain about stress, sleeping problems, physical fatigue, and posture issues – not to mention poor eating habits.
Here’s a thought: how about encouraging kids to do yoga?
While we think of kids as naturally flexible, many are working hard to keep up with a busy schedule, causing unusually stressful conditions which are transferred to their minds and bodies. So, it’s not unusual to hear kids complaining about “crackly bones”, “sore knees”, or “feeling old” – even during a yoga class.
Is it any wonder the favorite yoga pose among most kids who do yoga is always the final resting pose?
Students are under pressure to perform in year-round sports activities leaving little time to relax and be kids. So why not find some time for them to unwind from the stress of school and sports activities with yoga.
Over the past few years, the availability of yoga practice for students from the age of 5 through late teens, has proven to help them focus for learning and build strength for sports activities.
According to the northern Virginia-based YoKid, and organization that encourages yoga and meditation for children and provides training for adult teachers, 70% of kids and teens they surveyed, report that yoga helped them with school work.
A recent study of the YoKid yoga program revealed improvements in students’ mood and physical fitness levels based on participation in a YoKid yoga class. Students who participated in the YoKid program were less angry, more relaxed, more flexible (physically), and showed improved concentration after completing at least three weeks yoga.
Yoga can help kids:
- build confidence and self-esteem,
- improve concentration and focus,
- develop the brain and intellect,
- learn balance, flexibility, coordination and strength,
- cope with stress and difficult emotions,
- develop creative and imagination skills,
- sharpen and expand awareness, and
- develop calmness.
Yoga programs for kids and teens, as well as for both parents and child, are currently being offered in a number of local studios.
Yoga on York offers classes on Fridays and Saturdays with special classes for teens, and kids 5-8, and 9-12.
Whole Kids Yoga, in the Annapolis area, focuses completely on kids from age 2 through 5th grade. They also offer classes throughout the week.
YoKid offers training for both adults and trained yoga instructors interested in learning about the art of teaching children. There are a number of classes available throughout the year in the Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia areas.
