Relaxation techniques are practiced by many people. This month is dedicated to one popular relaxation exercise, yoga. Yogis all over the world, beginners and advanced, will participate in this spiritual experience.
Yoga is a mind-body technique that produces many health benefits. Some believe that it is a spiritual experience involving meditation. Meditation allows a person to get in tune with their inner thoughts or selves-known as their spiritual nature.
Breath focus and repetitive prayer produce a relaxation response.Some report lower psychological distress and an increase in overall health. Yoga helps create a quiet mind and a stress free body. Mindful breathing fills the body with oxygen creating euphoria. Deep stretches relaxes the muscles and loosens tight joints. Overall, there is less tension in the mind and body.
Research even shows that practices of mind-body forms of yoga, along with prayer and meditation affect genetics. It was determined in one study led by Dr Jeffery Dusek of the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis that "changes in the activation of genes have previously been seen in conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder." He believes that these changes determines physiological changes that help maintain the health of the body.
