Yet another Mexican police chief murdered

Morelos, Mexico - On Monday, gunmen on motorcycles surrounded Zacatepec police chief Juan Manuel Zamudio at a gas station and riddled him with gunfire.

Zamudio was taken to a nearby hospital where he soon died, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Morelos which is just outside of Mexico City has become increasingly violent in recent months, as the war between rival cartels closes-in on the capitol city.

Of course, the murder of police chiefs has become rather commonplace in Mexico.

-In June 2011, gunmen opened fire on Ciudad Isla municipal police coordinator Ricardo Reyes Alvarez while he sat at a car wash. After the attack, Alvarez attempted to reach a nearby hospital but succumbed to his wounds on the way.

Three civilians were also wounded in the shooting.

The gunmen were reportedly armed with AR-15 assault rifles.

Ciudad Isla is located in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, where three cartels are currently battling one another for control of the region.

-In May 2011, Ascencion Police Chief Manuel Martinez Arvizo, along with two of his bodyguards were kidnapped and murdered. Ascencion is located the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

The Chihuahua state Attorney General’s Office reported that the three were abducted as they were returning from the city of Casas Grandes. Their bodies were discovered on Saturday.

Chief Arvizo and his bodyguards appear to have been tortured.

Chihuahua has become the scene of an ongoing bloody a battle between the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels over control of lucrative smuggling routes into the U.S.

-In February 2011, gunmen murdered Nuevo Laredo Police Chief Manuel Farfan Carriola shortly after he left police headquarters. His bodyguards and his personal secretary were also killed in the attack.

Carriola, a retired army brigadier general, had only been on for 33 days. When he took office, he vowed to end the "cruel, unjust and difficult" violence being perpetuated by the drug cartels.

In 2005, Nuevo Laredo’s police chief was murdered after only seven hours in office.

The city is located in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and shares the border with Laredo, Texas.

The Mexican government recently announced that where 47,515 people have been killed in that country’s ongoing drug war since December 2006.

However, the newspaper La Jornada reports the death toll to be more than 50,000.
