Pure and unadulterated ignorance of the most basic concepts of economics is in abundance on the far left. One columnist from the far left recently wrote an article about Fox News claiming that “too many people have health insurance.” Actually, it wasn't Fox News making such a claim, but one of their medical contributers, Dr. Marc Siegel, who said that many are on health insurance.
Dr. Siegel has said, as a guest on Hannity last night, in part, “What Obamacare really got wrong in a big way is understanding that we are talking about the healthcare needs of the people of the U.S., not the health insurance needs. It's a totally different thing. Before they started this, we were all in trouble with insurance to begin with. There is too much health insurance, it covers too much.”
First it has to be understand that healthcare and health insurance are not the same thing, not even close. One is actually the product and service, the other is simply insurance. Insurance doesn't conduct physical examinations, or perform knee replacement surgeries, or deliver babies. It simply pays for them, in the form of third party payments. Simply put, the first two parties are you as patient and your doctor. The third party is the insurance company, if you're paying your doctor via health insurance. The problem, economically, is that when more products and services are paid for by someone else, e.g. a third party payer, the costs rise exponentially because, in theory (and usually reality too), the first two parties are less aware and less concerned about the PRICE of the products and services when someone else is paying. Dr. Siegel, although he's trained as a physician, also shows he understands economics, because he clearly knows that when too many people are on health insurance, it causes the costs of providing his services to go up without him necessarily being better paid. The health insurance bureaucracies (that are only out-done on the efficiency scale by government healthcare bureaucracies) eat up a lot of the money. So the good doctor was spot on correct to say we have too many people on health insurance.
Dr. Ben Carson addressed this issue and he was spot on correct too. Dr. Carson pointed out that better and less expensive healthcare would be provided if everyone had a health savings account, that would pay for about 80 percent of all medical expenses for most, and a very low cost catastrophic insurance policy to cover the major medical emergencies an individual might encounter. He's right. The combination of the two would be far less costly than comprehensive health insurance, it would bring down healthcare costs by instilling competition and consumer choice into the system, and it would also lead to more individual health freedom rather than a big government system that would ration healthcare and dictate personal choices over everyone. Dr. Carson's plan would work quite well, and bolsters what Dr. Siegel said, that we have too many on health insurance plans that cover too much.
But these points appears to be lost on progressives on the far left, who either do not understand basic economics, or choose not to understand them.
“With millions of Americans uninsured, to even suggest that "too many people" already have health insurance is beyond absurd. Dr. Siegel did let his true colors show as he closed his thoughts complaining that he might see a dip in pay. There is no hard evidence that shows that all doctors will receive a cut in pay, but Fox News continues to push the rhetoric. Doctors in the United States receive some of the largest salaries for their profession than anywhere else in the world, unfortunately at the expense of high health insurance costs and lack of those who can afford to purchase it.”
This is clearly a misunderstanding of Dr. Siegel's points. Dr. Siegel didn't say anything about the uninsured. And by the way, uninsured doesn't mean lack of access to healthcare. Anyone can go into the emergency room and get taken care of if needed. If you get into a car accident, you'll be taken to the hospital regardless of whether you have health insurance. They perform what is needed and ask you afterward how you'll pay the bill. What Dr. Siegel was addressing, is that having most on health insurance that covers almost everything is not an economically efficient way to pay for the healthcare services of the population. I”m sure he would agree that a combination of health saving accounts and catastrophic insurance, as suggested by Dr. Ben Carson, would be a far more efficient way of providing the services.
Which means, therefore, that Dr. Siegel was spot on correct.
There are too many people on health insurance.
The far left has come up with many different ways to attempt to destroy the economy (other than ObamaCare) so they can ultimately impose their socialist agenda once they believe they have convinced us of the “failure of capitalism.” Make no mistake about it, the far left will do anything to convince you that the free market can't work so they might convince you to let them impose socialism on us. One of the other schemes the left has figured out, to ultimately impose socialism on us, is the cap and trade scheme.
Let's look at what is behind this scheme. It is based on the original, and now entirely discredited, “greenhouse effect” theory that suggested increased carbon dioxide from human activities is causing global temperature to rise. Soon after, during the last 1970s and after, this bogus theory was renamed “global warming” after the idea of the “greenhouse effect” was debunked. It turns out that we as human beings can not increase the percentage of carbon dioxide in earth's atmosphere no matter how hard we try, because the increases in carbon dioxide immediately causes increase growth of vegetation on earth – plants and trees.
A basic understanding of high school biology explains this. All the living beings on earth, including human beings, that intake oxygen to survive also exhale or otherwise output carbon dioxide. Plants of all kinds consume that same carbon dioxide and output oxygen. That creates a balance that nature maintains no matter how much fuel we burn to output more carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide is the inevitable product of life and production and progress. When the far left declares war on carbon dioxide, they are declaring war on human life, life in general, and anything else we do that is productive and supports our way of life. That is ultimately the objective of the far left, to destroy human life as we know it.
So when the “greenhouse effect” theory was debunked, the alleged “scientists” who are actually activists of the far left renamed it “global warming.” As just as Ryan Houck says in this great video he produced for Free Market America, when it's cold out they call it “climate change” instead, but they still mean global warming. Global warming is equally proved to be a hoax.
Based on the debunked notion that human beings are pumping out increased carbon dioxide that is causing global warming, the left decided that a war on carbon dioxide is needed. The far left, and their leftist scientists practicing junk science, invented the concept of the “carbon footprint,” which is the quantity of carbon dioxide that a person, or other entity, is responsible for outputting. Specific focus was put on the “carbon footprint” of whole industries that would be the targets of efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.
The cap and trade scheme is designed to cap overall emissions of carbon dioxide while creating an entirely fake “market” for a fake “product” called carbon credits. Those companies that could figure out a way to emit less carbon dioxide could sell the “credits” they would have in surplus, to the companies whose carbon footprint exceeded their government-dictated levels for carbon dioxide emissions. Behind this fake “market” for carbon credits wold be the government-imposed limits on overall carbon dioxide emissions. Imagine the same government that, right now, can't figure out how to set up the fake health care insurance “markets” they call exchanges, trying to implement this scheme.
As the cap and trade scheme is implemented, the limits on emissions would be lowered, and as a result, the carbon credits traded on the fake market for them would sky rocket in price. And industries and companies would be required to purchase them. Or the government would shut them down. Since you know that corporations aren't bottomless pits of money, they can't print cash (or engage in “monetary policy”) like the government does, they have to raise the prices of the products and services they create to raise that cash. So the sky-rocketing costs of carbon credits would be paid for by us, the people, as consumers at the cash register.
As it progressed, this cap and trade scheme would destroy whole industries, wipe out corporations and put many businesses out of business, and in turn it would smash the private sector economy. That's just what the far left wants. If they can prove the “failure” of the free market economy (while hoping you're too ignorant to see they were the ones that engineered that failure with cap and trade, and ObamaCare, and the rest of the failed far left agenda), they think they can make the case to you for socialism.
That is why the Obama Regime insists on implementing ObamaCare. That's why they so strongly want cap and trade, even though it failed to pass in the Senate, after the then Nancy Pelosi-lead House passed it in 2009. That's why the Obama Regime wants to maximize as much as possible the percentage of the population that is on various welfare programs. The agenda of the far left isn't about helping anyone, or even their claims about so-called social justice. The agenda of the far left is to empower government as much as possible. The left believes in government, for the left, government and controlling everyone else, is their religion.
The cap and trade scheme is just one example that proves this.
