Yes, American Apparel went there...Merkin laden mannequins now on display in NY

When you think of American Apparel do you think of all the versatile basics they sell that every man, woman and child needs and loves or do you the words 'controversial', 'provocative' and 'over the top' come to mind? More than likely the latter, since it seems that American Apparel lives by the motto that 'no publicity is bad publicity'. Instead of relying on the quality and fashionability of its clothes to get attention and draw customers in, they instead rely on cheap, gratuitous and perverse means to achieve attention and publicity.

American Apparel, the king of gratuity...
American Apparel, the king of gratuity...http://www.americanapparel.com

Case in point, American Apparel's latest debacle and shameful attempt to garner attention; the bushy mannequin. Think carefully before you begin to protest hair because in no way is it a reference to a bushy head of hair but rather a mannequin with revealing, un-manicured pubic hair.

WHAT?

Revealed yesterday Jan.16 in their Houston St. NY store located in SoHo,, American Apparel has placed not one but THREE mannequins that are 'anatomically correct' complete with protruding nipples and merkins aka pubic hair wigs. That's right. The mannequins all have pubic hair ranging from an untrimmed bikini area to a full blown merkin spewing out of the ultra sheer panties.

Cheap publicity stunt? Of course, but not according to American Apparel in a statement released to Elle magazine:

'American Apparel is a company that celebrates natural beauty, and the Lower East Side Valentine’s Day window continues that celebration. We created it to invite passerbys to explore the idea of what is ‘sexy’ and consider their comfort with the natural female form. This is the same idea behind our advertisements which avoid many of the photoshopped and airbrushed standards of the fashion industry. So far we have received positive feedback from those that have commented and we’re looking forward to hearing more points of view.'

So as not to offend anyone you can view these merkin laden mannequins by clicking here and once you've taken a glance and finished laughing and shaking your head, come back here and tell me...what do you think of American Apparel attempt at bringing their interpretation of natural beauty to the masses? Do you think they could have chosen a different route to depict natural beauty or is this just anther shock campaign like preciously seen in their advertisement that depicts a young model wearing sheer underwear with her pubic hair exposed or last year's menstruation/vagina tee shirt?
