Ever want to exercise your creative muscles like you (in theory, anyway) exercise to get that six-pack and toned arms? Starting March 1st, The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is unveiling an exciting new adult education program focused on supporting an "aesthetic fitness" course. One of the best parts of the program is that it's free!
YBCA's YOU program, a pilot arts program based on a gym membership format, also features free admission to all YBCA events, exclusive behind-the-scenes socials, films and gallery exhibitions. From March 1 through November 30, the 100 chosen participants will also be encouraged to take part in artist talks and field trips to further their understanding of the creative process.
YOU's approach is based on Visual Thinking Strategies, a research-based teaching method that improves critical thinking and language through discussion of visual images rather than through academic instruction.
The lead personal trainer for this art fitness regimen is educator, director, performance artist and creator of physical theater Laurel Butler, who says she's dedicated to developing participants' personal and professional goals and empowering artists to create.
In a press release from the YBCA, Joël Tan, YBCA's director of community engagement, says:
"Ultimately, we want more people having better and deeper experiences with art. This pilot is about an actual live human guide connecting with individuals and small groups to experience arts and cultural events that are custom-tailored to their aspirations, desires, and educational goals. We invite anyone looking to build their aesthetic muscles to register, whether they want to learn a few pointers for their next cocktail party or attend all the openings in town and just need the motivation to do it."
While the YOU program takes creative development seriously, you'll also be able to meet new people and mingle with a community of other creative folk in a social context. The free program has limited enrollment available, and pre-registration is required.
You must be 18 or older, and participants will be selected based on their interest in collaborative arts enrichment and the ability to make a nine-month commitment to the YBCA: YOU program.
The registration deadline is February 28, 5 PM
Orientation: March 3, 6-9 PM
