You want a true natural outdoor, eclectic, interesting experience fly into El Paso Texas and head, during the day, east along I 10 and US 90/VanHorn) for about 3 hours. Target: Marfa Texas (pop 4000 something). A few notables as you travel toward your destination:
Do not speed through the little towns you encounter.
There is a Border Patrol Station where you must stop on I 10, generally only about 10 minutes to get through.
Just before Valentine Texas (pop 241) no mistake here, you will see the Marfa Prada store on your right. A rare photographic & personal experience.
The drive is scenic in numerous areas, again travel during the day and while paying attention relax, “200+ miles aint’t nothing to a Texan”.
Once arriving in Marfa only two places recommended to stay: The Hotel Paisano & The Thunderbird. Again a few notes: Breakfast is hard to find in Marfa on Mondays and Tuesdays, this was ever changing. You need to inquire. Marfa itself is a very artistic town particularly in visual art anchored by the world famous Chinati Foundation: amazing. Marfa also has the most beautiful courthouse (hopefully you would be just visiting) in the State. The community is unique and the people as one would suspect: wonderful. Both young and old and artsy, but regardless of vocation: very special.
The large humans walking around are true cowboys and 90% of all Ford Truck F150, 250 & 350s ever produced are there.
By the way if you get to Alpine (just 30 minutes) for some reason like a normal store, plan on eating the best barbecue in Texas at The Cowboy Grill.
Plan on two to three days around this area and then onward to Big Bend National Park, fairly close by Texas standards. A rare place in our Country. Enjoy!
