Part of the Fox Valley Park District, Red Oak Nature Center is located at 2343 S River St., Batavia, or on route 25 just one mile north of route 56. It is open year round so the natural cycles of the changing seasons can be enjoyed by all who are willing to venture outdoors, in any weather. The trails are open from sunup to sundown, and the Nature Center building hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 3 pm on weekends, and admission is free.
The park consists of approximately 40 acres situated alongside the Fox River, criss-crossed by easy trails for both hikers and bikers. One of the most interesting attractions is Devil's Cave, just a short hike from the Nature Center. There's also a sturdy observation deck overlooking the Fox River, just steps away.
Inside the Nature Center are exhibits on natural history and local folklore, as well as some interesting little creatures. Red Oak offers various programs throughout the year for children and adults. But creative homeschooling families can use the facilities for their own outdoor education programs, as well. Let nature be your classroom in the beautiful surroundings of the Red Oak Nature Center.
