Year in review: The best movie trailers of 2012

Like any good show, let's start with the previews. Unfortunately in 2012, we saw the lame invention of the "teaser for the teaser" masquerading as an "announcement trailer." When you get past the short stuff, there were some solid and non-spoiler-laden trailers for 2012 movies. Just to clarify, I narrowed this to just 2012 movies, even though many 2013 movies have already begun their marketing push over the past year. Here are my picks for the best (with links, of course). At the top of the list was a trailer just released two week ago. The additional story details in the second and final trailer for Zero Dark Thirty, backed by the haunting Scala and Kolacny Brothers cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" is breathtaking. That SEAL team door open at the end just nails the goosebumps!

1. Zero Dark Thirty (final trailer)

2. The Avengers (trailer #2)

3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (first trailer)

4. Skyfall (official trailer)

5. Ted (red band trailer)

6. Life of Pi (teaser trailer)

7. Les Miserables (teaser)

8. Cloud Atlas (extended trailer)

9. Wreck-It Ralph (first trailer)

10. Looper (teaser)

HONORABLE MENTION: Two exceptional trailers that would make the top 10 if their 2012 release dates weren't bumped to 2013 are The Great Gatsby (first trailer) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (premiere trailer). Both have great uses of unique music with great imagery to boot. The sweet "Seven Nation Army" cover in G.I. Joe: Retaliation is awesome!

Locally, many of these movies are still playing at your local west side Chicago movie theaters. Be sure to check out showtimes and buy advance tickets from Fandango. Those that are on DVD and Blu-ray can be found at your local Redbox and Blockbuster locations here in the city. Enjoy a movie or trailer tonight!
