While reading the area death notices of the Akron area, as the year ends and the new one begins, we need to pay tribute to those who have passed on the year before in retrospect to the year. While the classic movie lover may celebrate the release of a classic film on DVD and the festivals they have attended in the past year, the year is defined by those in the industry who have passed away. Here are a few:
Elizabeth Taylor- from child star to mature actress, she is better known for her beauty, her charity, her jewelry and fashions, and her tumultous personal life, she will be remembered for her bold risks she took as an actress, defining an time period in film.
Harry Morgan- a cinematic staple better known for his television work, but appearing in films as early as the 1940s like The Ox-Bow Incident and Inherit The Wind.
Susannah York - a diligent and graceful actress of the sixties and seventies, known for Tom Jones and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Michael Gough- a strong support to any movie he starred in from the 1940s to the last decade, appearing in the Batman movies of the eighties and nineties, along with appearing in Women In Love, Out Of Africa, The Serpent and The Rainbow, Trog.
Sidney Lumet- a luminary director known for films capturing cultural nuances and social zeitgiests of the time. He directed such films as 12 Angry Men, Network, Fail-Safe, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Wiz.
Ken Russell- a controversial British director who literally had no boundaries exploring human sexuality and sociopolitical underbellies for all to see in his films. Films like Women In Love, The Devils, The Boyfriend, The Music Lovers, and The Lair of the Green Worm made up his repetoire.
These are a few of those whom we lost this past year, and as long as we can see their movies, they will be alive in our hearts.
