It was a great year for Steampunk in Atlanta, and here in the last week of 2011 it is a great time to look back at some top events:
1.AnachroCon: I Because I had not yet started writing this column, I wrote about AnachroCon 2011 at Atlanta Historic Places here on examiner.com. AnachroCon, an alternate history/steampunk convention, took place February 25-27, 2011 There were historical re-enactors portraying Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and Vincent Van Gogh, workshops on creating costumes and accessories, panels on a wide range of subjects including Regency history, Underwater Archaeology, and pirates, muisc, and much more! I can't wait to go back this year in February.
2. The Clockwork Carnival: The Clockwork Carnival, which took place in April, was the creation of The Artifice Club, which is responsible for many fine steampunk events in Atlanta. It took place at The Goat Farm, a great historic industrial location perfect for steampunk! There was great music, a giant ostrich, jugglers, a beautiful aerialist, strolling performers, and lots and lots of acts involving fire, and it was a true sensation from start to finish!
3. The Boiler Room: In May, the Boiler Room opened in Duluth, giving Penny Dreadful Productions an actual physical store from which to sell their excellent costumes, accessories and props, as well as work by other steampunk artists and artisans. The store is located at 3067-B Main St.
4. Weird West Saloon: The Artfice Club's second event of the year occurred in July. The Weird West Saloon featured western steampunk, with lots of cowboys and saloon girls. Highlights included casino games for charity, the very funny host Sabrina Pandora, and music from Blair Crimmins and the Hookers.
5. DragonCon: DragonCon is huge for steampunk as it is for any other kind of fantasy or science fiction. In fact, no one in or around Atlanta should miss this convention, which is the largest multimedia science fiction and fantasy convention in the universe and occurs right in the middle of downtown Atlanta every Labor Day weekend!
6. Mechanical Masquerade: The Artifice Club's last big event for 2011 was the Mechanical Masquerade, a masked formal ball with the theme "A Paranormal Fantasy" at Blue Mark Studios in Atlanta. There was music and magic, marvelous costumes and storytelling.
