Yazoo Brewing brings Mardi Crawl back to Nashville
Laissez les bon temps rouler! That's a Cajun French phrase overused around the Mardi Gras time of year, or anytime anyone says anything remotely related to New Orleans. I think it means something about using a ruler to measure how much fun you're having, or whatever.
But no matter what, Mardi Gras is a big time party. The Tuesday that is the day before the beginning of Lent is the biggest of the party days/nights, because during Lent you're supposed to give up a lot of stuff, like partying. Unfortunately, Lent tends to overlap days like, well, my birthday, and St. Patrick's day, so that is a little problematic.
And now, the rest of the story. A couple years ago, Neil from Yazoo Brewing was having a couple pints with Andrew of Hooters/ Beer Sellar, when the bars were still basically together, and they were looking for something fun to do as a promotion. They had already created the now wildly successful World Big Wheel Championships. It was a cool, dreary winter night, and they were probably thinking about warmer weather, and Mardi Gras is a bit of a harbinger of spring. The Mardi Crawl was born!
The first two years were Nashville only events, much like the original Big Wheel Championships. They started at the Beer Sellar with introductions, introductory pints, and the beginning of the bead swapping. Most of the forty or fifty people in attendance were bright and colorful in appearance, if not totally decked out in crazy New Orleans style attire. There were the crazy hats, masks, and other such Mardi Gras accoutrements. The group then paraded to four or five bars along 2nd and Broadway before reconvening at the Beer Sellar for a couple pre-cab rounds.
This year, Mardi Crawl has gone regional. They developed a full, seven day tour, in two states, culminating in the fat Tuesday finale here in Nashville. Mississippi had consecutive evening events in Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Jackson, and Starkville. The tour rolled into Memphis last night, March 2, and heads to Knoxville tonight. (UPDATE: Knoxville has been postponed due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for March 11). The grand tour finishes (sort of) with a bang in Nashville, fat Tuesday, March 4, at 6:00 PM at Hooters.
The new scope of the event, with upwards of 250 people expected in attendance, brings about a new scope of the crawl. Starting at Hooters, the tour will then hit the Beer Sellar, Riverfront Tavern, BB Kings, Dicks Last Resort, Buffalo Billiards, Doc Hollidays, and Bootleggers Inn, before ending at Silver Dollar where Yazoo will be giving away a trip for two to New Orleans. As if more incentive might be needed, the Mardi Crawl is also being used as the launch of the brand new spring seasonal beer, a Helles Bock.
So grab a couple paczkis for breakfast (or is that an up north thing), stuff yourself all day, and let the good times roll (yeah, I know what the dang phrase means). Join in on one of Nashville's newest traditions, the third annual Mardi Crawl. Voulez vous coucher avec, no, that's not it. What's the other one? Laissez les bon temps rouler, and a votre sante.
Time for a pint. Cheers!
