Yates high school, Bush make history in different ways

The Jack Yates Lions won an expected state championship on Saturday night, rallying past Lancaster 92-73 to finish the season unbeaten at 34-0 and likely ranked No. 1 in the nation in the mythical high school basketball polls.

These Lions will go down as one of the best teams to ever play high school basketball in the state of Texas. They are the highest scoring team in high school basketball history, and controversy aside, they embodied true excellence on the court.  Under coach Greg Wise -- one of the state's best high school coaches -- the Lions reached unprecedented heights.

It will be a team talked about for decades, much like the unbelievable Willowridge teams of the early 2000s. All season long, Yates was compared to those T.J. Ford-led Eagles.

Fort Bend Bush was not compared to those teams. They weren't expected to win a state title. They won't be getting any national love.

But the Broncos, too, have a state title trophy, beating Garland Lakeview Centennial 65-58 for the Class 5A title.

Bush upset Bellaire in the regional tournament to get here, and finished 35-4. While they will not be remembered in the same reverent tones as Yates, their coach deserves to be.

Ironically, Ronnie Courtney is the head coach at Bush. The same Ronnie Courtney who led those Willowridge teams that Yates is so often compared to. (Like Yates, Willowridge won back to back titles).

The same Ronnie Courtney who never got much credit for those teams. Who heard that "anybody could win with that group of kids."

The same Ronnie Courtney who managed to get Texas Southern to the NCAAs during a college stint.

Courtney now has state titles with two different schools and an NCAA tournament bid on the next level. So while Yates will be remembered as a transcendent champion, it's also time Courtney got his due as a head coach. This Bush team was good, but it doesn't measure up to Willowridge. The school has only been in existence for eight years.

The Yates Lions made history. So, too, did Ronnie Courtney.
