Feeling out of balance? Need to be grounded and focused? Have a cut or wound that needs to heal? Need to stop bleeding quickly? Essential oil of Yarrow has long been used to balance and heal.
Yarrow is very balancing, having the yin-yang qualities of hard and soft, gentle and strong. According to Suzanne Fischer-Rizzi, in her book Complete Aromatherapy Handbook, "When feeling torn, the oil helps us reconcile opposing forces. It balances highs and lows, internal and external, so that our thoughts may be in heaven while our feet remain solidly on the ground. This makes the oil a perfect companion in times of major life changes (like mid-life crisis, menopause, or other times of transition) or when intense emotions become overwhelming."
Yarrow is one of the main oils we use in our practice, and at home, for healing wounds. Even knowing the remarkable healing qualities in yarrow I have been repeatedly surprised by the results I have seen with my patients. One of the key factors that I rely on is that it brings down swelling and stops bleeding quickly. It is very beneficial for healing in the mouth when teeth are extracted or for infections with the gums.
Yarrow helps to regulate menstrual cycles as well as helping with cramping and heavy menstrual flow. Two drops of yarrow to one drop peppermint oil on a sanitary napkin or on a tampon will slow heavy bleeding with menstruation. Yarrow has been known to cause skin irritation and so it is best to use a carrier oil when applying it to the napkin or tampon (a couple of drops goes a long way).
When purchasing yarrow look for a pale green yarrow for balancing and the deeper blue for healing wounds.
Properties: anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, blood cleansing, styptic, regulates menstruation, emotionally balancing
