The New York Yankees have traded right-handed pitcher Sergio Mitre to the Milwaukee Brewers and signed his possible replacement, Kevin Millwood, to a minor league deal, according to a statement issued by the club on Friday afternoon.
Millwood, a 14-year veteran, has a career mark of 159-137 and 4.11 ERA. In 31 starts for the Baltimore Orioles last season, the 36-year-old native of Gastonia, North Carolina went 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA.
Millwood's career highlights include an appearance in the 1999 All-Star Game as a member of the Atlanta Braves, and a no-hitter he threw for the Philadelphia Phillies against the San Francisco Giants on April 27, 2003.
New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, admittedly uncertain of whether Millwood has anything left to offer at this stage of his career, considers the signing a "no-risk" option.
In return for Sergio Mitre, who went 3-6 with a 5.03 ERA as a long reliever and spot starter in two seasons with the Yanks, New York will receive outfielder Chris Dickerson, who bats and throws left-handed.
Dickerson, 28, has appeared in a total of 173 games in the majors -- most of which as a Cincinnati Red.
