The New York Yankees have placed third baseman Alex Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list due to a strain in his left calf.
The Yankees want to play this "extremely safe," guarding against losing one of their most potent hitters as we approach the playoffs.
Rodriguez was out of the lineup in four of his past five games because of the injury. Before Saturday's game, manager Joe Girardi said the disabled list was not an option.
After the game, general manager Brian Cashman and Girardi decided to put Rodriguez on the disabled list. He will not return until the first week of September.
To fill A-Rod's spot on the roster, the Yankees have recalled Triple-A starter Ivan Nova. Nova will make the start Monday in Toronto, moving all the other starting pitchers back one day.
