The game took a standstill right after as Ichiro received a standing ovation from the fans. Ichiro's Yankees teammates met him at first base to congratulate him with hugs and high fives.
In his seven seasons in the Japanese Pacific League, Ichiro collected 1,278 hits. During his 13 years in the United States, he now has 2,722 major league hits.
“The first hit to this last 4,000th hit, every hit was just as important as this last one. Every at-bat, you can’t get two or three hits, you can only get one. Each at-bat is so important. That’s how I look at it," said Ichiro.
Ichiro Suzuki joined Pete Rose and Ty Cobb as the only 3 players with 4,000 career hits in professional baseball history.
