New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada officially announced his retirement from Major League Baseball in a press conference at Yankee Stadium.
The press conference drew more fans than any other press conference in the stadium's short history.
Posada said that other teams had been interested in him but he didn't want to go anywhere other than the Yankees.
Posada spent his entire career with the New York Yankees, where he was selected to five All-Star games in 17 seasons. He finished third in the Most Valuable Player voting in 2003 and sixth in 2007.
He is one of four members of the Yankees to play for all five world championship teams (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009). The others are Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Andy Pettitte. He also played for two other pennant winners (2001 and 2003).
Throughout his career, Posada has hit 275 home runs with 1065 runs batted in and a .273 batting average. He is one of four catchers in history to collect 1500 hits, 350 doubles, 275 home runs, and 1000 RBIs.
