The 36-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has spent his entire 13-year career with the Baltimore Orioles. Roberts’ career numbers are very good for a second baseman, with a .349 on-base percentage and 278 career steals. Roberts also led the league in doubles twice.
Roberts has been ineffective in recent years, playing in just 192 of a possible 648 games since 2009 due to various injuries, including concussions and injuries to his neck, back, knee, hip, and hamstring.
The Yankees have spent their offseason looking to replace Robinson Cano, who left New York for a $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners.
Before settling on Roberts, the Yankees explored signing free agent Omar Infante and trading for Brandon Phillips. Roberts will now partner with fellow off-season signee Kelly Johnson to man second base in the Bronx.
