Yahoo malware attack: Users exposed to malware through advertisement on Yahoo

Yahoo’s users were exposed to a malware attack that hit Yahoo’s advertising server over the last few days. This is a new report coming from an internet security firm who detected this Yahoo malware. The malware came through an advertisement and it hit users in various countries, according to CNN on Jan. 5.

This was explained by Yahoo in simple terms saying they identified an ad that was designed to spread malware to some of the Yahoo users. Yahoo released a statement on Saturday night:

"At Yahoo, we take the safety and privacy of our users seriously. We recently identified an ad designed to spread malware to some of our users. We immediately removed it and will continue to monitor and block any ads being used for this activity."

“Yahoo servers were releasing an ‘exploit kit,’” as some of the advertisements were malicious, reports CNN. This malware dates back to Dec. 30, when the earliest signs of the infection were detected. Fox-It, a company that focuses on cyber defense based in the Netherlands, estimated it is possible that this new malware event was able to spread 27,000 infections every hour.

The countries most affected by this Yahoo malware event are Great Britain, France and Romania. Why these countries? It is suggested by Fox-It that it is “likely due to the configuration of the malicious advertisements on Yahoo.”

While it’s unclear who created this attack, the security firm said it appears to be financially motivated.
