Yacht sets record, sailing from New York to San Francisco in record time

A yacht has set a sailing record from New York to San Francisco, Sunday’s San Francisco Examiner reports.

The 70-foot boat is called the Maserati. Appropriately enough, it is named after one of the world’s fastest cars. The Maserati made the 13,225-mile sail from New York to San Francisco in record time of 47 days, 2 hours, and 33 minutes. It easily beat the previous record of 57 days which was set in 1998.

The Maserati sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge late Saturday morning. It docked at the Pier 39 Marina about 11:30 a.m.

Yacht route

The Maserati had to sail around both Cape Horn and the tip of South America before making it to San Francisco.

The single-hulled Yacht was skippered Giovanni Soldini, 47. The yacht left New York City on New Year's Eve. Soldini is Italian and was greeted back in San Francisco by dignitaries including the San Francisco Counsul General Mauro Battocchi.
