After 15 months of trying, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente returned to winning an away game in La Liga MX. Xolos edged out Atlante FC 2-1 at the Andres Quintana Roo stadium in Cancun, Mexico in week 16 action of the Clausura 2014. With the victory Xolos move into the 6th position on the league table.

The Potros de Hierro are headed to the Ascenso MX at the end of the Clausura 2014. This was the last home game for Atlante in the first division, they travel to Chiapas FC for week 17.

The game began with Atlante applying pressure on the visiting squad. The sun was blaring and both teams were struggling to get their footing. After 20 minutes Xolos began to control of the field with Atlante giving up ground.

When Xolos were in control of the field, Atlante made a counterstrike and beat out goalkeeper Adrian Zermeño. Francisco Estrada shot to the far corner. A Xolos defender was in Zermeño’s path, and the keeper could do nothing to prevent the ball from entering his net. Atlante took the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

The second half began with Xolos going on the attack. Ecuadorian Fidel Martinez received a pass from Fernando Arce. Alone in front of the goalkeeper, Martinez fired to close the gap 1-1. Xolos instantly retook over the field.

Pedro Marini made his first substitutions as the team wanted to win their final home game. However, this left spaces open for Xolos who took advantage and mounted counterstrikes on the home side. In the 84th minute Dario Benedetto gave the Aztec dogs the lead. The Argentine fired the ball from outside the penalty area to find Yosgart Gutierrez’ top far corner. Xolos took over the scoreboard 2-1.

Two minutes later the referee called a doubtful penalty in Atlante’s favor. It appeared that Xolos would have to continue winless in away games since Jan. 20, 2013. Chilean Roberto Gutierrez took possession of the ball and waited his turn as the referee got control of things. Gutierrez shot a light roller to Zermeño’s left. The keeper dove and stopped the ball denying the blaugranas an opportunity to end their home season with a positive result.

Xolos held their ground and a few minutes later the referee blew the final whistle to give the rojinegros the 2-1 victory. Xolos will host Leon FC at the Caliente Stadium in the final week of the Clausura 2014.
