After dropping two games in La Liga MX, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente returned to winning in La Copa MX of the Apertura 2014. The Aztec dogs did a number on Ascenso MX side Zacatepec defeating the lower division team 3-1 at the Caliente Stadium on Wednesday.

Tijuana began their game a bit sluggish allowing the visitors to take possession of the ball in the first minutes of the game. In the 10th minute the Cañeros had their best opportunity of the game when they hit the post saving the local squad.

After a few shot from the visitors that went wide, Xolos put the ball in the net. Colombian Dayro Moreno took the ball down the wing into the area and centered to Dario Benedetto. The Argentine had cleared his marker and changed the ball’s direction putting into the net for the 1-0.

Zacatepec did not fall back after the goal. In the 29th minute Humberto Guzman received a center in the area and jumped to head the ball past goalkeeper Manuel Gibran. The Ascenso MX team had surprised the home side closing the gap 1-1.

Just as quickly as Zacatepec closed the gap, Xolos took the lead once more. In a series of short passes that ended up in the net, American Joe Corona gave the final touch to give his team the 2-1 lead. Xolos maintained control of the field and took the 2-1 lead into the break.

The Aztec dogs came out to bite in the second half. Benedetto was close to adding to the scoreboard but missed by inches just three minutes into the second half. Dominance was clearly beginning to manifest itself on the pitch as the dogs took control of the game.

Before Zacatepec could firmly place themselves on the pitch, Benedetto set up the team’s third goal of the night. The Argentine let the ball run to the edge of the field then centered to Henry Martin who was unmarked. Martin jumped and headed the ball into the net for the final 3-1.

Cesar Farias made his substitutions after the game was secured to give Javier Salas and American Paul Arriola a chance to show their game. He also gave Alfredo Moreno some minutes. Xolos will travel to Zacatepec, Mexico take on the Cañeros in the second game of fixture 1 next Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 to continue their participation in La Copa MX.
