Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente is in Guadalajara ready to take on Atlas FC at the Jalisco stadium in week 1 action of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. Tijuana is looking to improve on their 5-6-6 record from last season.
The Aztec dogs trained on the famous grounds that at one time was the home of Chivas de Guadalajara. Xolos had their preseason in Mazatlán where they did beach training and played against local Liga de Ascenso squad Dorados de Sinaloa. The dogs also faced Club America in Los Angeles in the L.A. Clasico at the Stub Hub Center.
After the team trained in Guadalajara they had the opportunity to greet the press. Midfielder Fernando Arce addressed the media concerning the upcoming season.
“We’re a step from starting the new season, we’ve set important goals, one is to have a better tournament and start off on the right foot,” the Tijuana-native said. “We had a good preseason. We had good friendlies which will help us as we start the season and the new championship.”
Ecuadorian Fidel Martinez, who is ready to start his fourth tournament with the rojinegros, talked about the opportunities he sees ahead in the Mexican league.
“We’re very happy. We've missed the tournament,” Martinez said. “We have a new opportunity to do things better. We’re motivated to try and reach our objectives.”
Tijuana faces the new season with two additions to the squad. Argentine Hernan Pellerano and Ecuadorian Jaimen Javier Ayovi. Pellerano took the opportunity to talk to the press about what he’s seen with the squad so far.
“We had a spectacular preseason, we have a humble and hard-working squad,” Pellerano said. “From there we can aim for big accomplishments, we’re ready.”
The dogs and Atlas have faced off on five occasions since the Apertura 2011. Their first meeting was a 2-2 draw at the Jalisco stadium. Tijuana won their home game during the Clausura 2012. A 1-1 draw followed in the Apertura 2012 at the Caliente stadium, season Tijuana won the league. Atlas finally claimed victory during the Clausura 2013 in Guadalajara. Their last meeting was a 3-3 in week 1 action at the “dog pound.”
The game is scheduled for Saturday at the Jalisco Stadium at 7 pm PST.
