Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente led the game from the fifth minute on at the Luis “Pirata” Fuente Stadium with a goal from defender Cristian Pellerano. But Pellerano would leave his team with a man down in the 79th minute getting sent off with a red card. The red card allowed Veracruz to close the gap for the final 1-1 in week 9 action of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX.
This was a game that the Aztec dogs could manage and earn their first road win of the season. It began on a positive note with Pellerano’s early goal. The Argentine fired, the ball was blocked, and he recovered it and fired once more, the second time sending it past the defense and keeper for the 1-0.
From there the game turned into a midfield battle with both teams looking to gain control of the ball. But the home side was able to hold possession just a bit more than Xolos. Despite time possession, the sharks were not able to generate much, leaving fans to think Tijuana would take the game.
But it was not meant to be for Tijuana, Pellerano was sent off with a direct red card in the 79th. With a one man advantage, Uruguayan Liber Quiñones was able to break the net for the 1-1. The Tiburones Rojos were able to rescue a point that keeps them out of the bottom of the relegation table.
Xolos have not been able to get the expected results in their last two games. A 3-0 reverse at home against Chiapas FC last week, followed by a 1-1 against an accessible team this week have put Xolos’ playoff hopes in danger. So far they’ve only managed to earn a single point of the six disputed.
Adding to the team’s woes is that fact that Coach Cesar Farias was sent-off at the end of the game meaning he will not be at the helm in next week’s game against Chivas de Guadalajara. Veracruz Coach Jose Luis “Chelis” Sanchez Sola was also sent off at the end of the game.
Tijuana reached 11 points in the tournament and have move to the 10th position on the league table. They will take on Chivas de Guadalajara next Friday. “Chelis” Sola earns his first point at the head of Veracruz. The sharks still remain at the bottom of the league table.
