The Aztec dogs began strong moving forward on attack and quickly taking shots on Rodolfo Cota’s net. Argentine Dario Benedetto was very active on the pitch and the most motivated player on the field. He fought for loose balls and passed to his teammates on several occasion generating plays that Xolos could not take advantage of.
In the 9th minute of play La Franja surprised the dogs with a three simple passes in the area that landed in Luis Loroña’s foot. The defender shot to goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo’s right. The keeper dove, but the ball entered his net to give Puebla the 1-0 lead.
From that point on Ruben Omar Romano ordered his team to fall back and defend the goal. Xolos took over the field and generated more plays, but could not break through the Puebla defense. Romano’s team have five across the back line with a sixth in the center to intercept. Tijuana could not get close enough to take a shot on goal.
The second half saw more of the same with the Puebla defense buried in the back waiting on a counterstrike opportunity. The game began to get heated with a slight scuffle breaking out between the players. A second scuffle left Puebla with a 10 men on the field after Efrain Cortes was sent off for un-sportsman-like conflict. For the final 26 minutes of play La Franja left possession of the ball with the home team, waiting in the back defending their lead.
Benedetto, who’d been taken down in the area in the first half but no penalty called, was taken down once more in the second half. However, this time the referee pulled a yellow card on the Argentine for taking a dive. The dogs continued to take shots, but time ran out. Puebla win their first game in Tijuana.
