Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente is currently in the Mexican Pacific coastal city of Mazatlán undergoing preseason preparation for the upcoming Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. Joining Xolos this season is Ecuadorian national team player Jaime Javier Ayovi arriving from that nation’s LDU Quito. The 25 year-old had his first practice sessions with the squad and commented on the camaraderie that exists in the ranks.

“I’m very happy to be here, to be a part of this great institution, Tijuana,” Ayovi said. “Happy for the preseason we’ve had here in Mazatlán. It’s been very intense. It helps in building conditioning so we can start the season in the best form possible.”

Ayovi is also looking to earn a spot on his national team for next year’s world cup in Brazil for which he is placing great importance on his arrival in Latin America’s most northern city.

“Hoping everything goes well in the next six months, first that Xolos is in the top of the league table so we can make the playoffs and compete for a title,” Ayovi added. “On a personal level, that I can score many goals so that I can be added to the final Ecuadorian national team list for the Brazil 2014 World Cup.”

He also talked about the internal competition that he will face for a spot on the first team. Amongst the competitors are his countryman Fidel Martinez and U.S. international Herculez Gomez. Last season Gomez, along with recent signing Argentine Dario Benedetto spent most of the competition on the injured list. However, all three players will be challenging for a spot when the season opens next month. The other player to consider is Paul Arriola. The 18 year-old California native earned a lot of playing time last year in La Liga MX and scored an important goal in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“It’s a nice thing within a team to have internal competition,” Ayovi continued. “That helps the team improve on all aspects. As for me, well I have to work hard and put my part in and take advantage of opportunities. I know this team has great players, I hope we are all in good form so we can go far.”

Ayovi had previously been to the Caliente stadium while he was a player for La Liga MX side CF Pachuca in 2012. He says he remembers the fans and had a message for them.

“They are great fans and we are going to put a great effort into it,” Ayovi concluded. “Hopefully I can score many goals so that the team can reach the top of the league.”
