On September 30th, Xi3 announced it would release its PISTON on Black Friday of this year. The Xi3 PISTON is a powerful gaming system, allowing users to run their favorite games and access music, movies and TV shows.
The gaming console will cost $999. According to Dave Politis of the Xi3 Corporation, they have good reasons to price the Xi3 PISTON at such a high price. “PISTON offers users a level of freedom and choice unheard of in the gaming console world. But one of the reasons PISTON Consoles cost more than gaming consoles from the Big 3 manufacturers is that PISTON uses solid state drives (SSDs) while they only use spinning discs. SSDs are faster and more reliable than discs and provide a significantly better overall gaming experience.” Politis also claims that the Xi3 PISTON can replace major game consoles, such as: Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo because it’s an open gaming console. “One of the main problems with gaming systems from the Big 3 manufacturers is that they are each closed systems, which means people can only play a game developed for a Wii on a Wii (or Xbox games for Xbox play or PlayStation games for PlayStation play). Such a closed approach also forces game developers to spend significant amounts of time and money developing for multiple platforms so they can reach the most number of prospective gamers. And that's on top of developing game versions that can run over the Internet or on a Windows-based computer.”
The Xi3 PISTON will also be upgradable without having to buy a newer console. This will be done by replacing one of three interconnected boards, found inside the console (http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/xi3-releases-piston-console-q-194100928.html). Is the Xi3 PISTON ready for primetime against Nintendo, Xbox, and Playstation? Will people be able willing to pay $999 for this console because of its company’s bold claims or will the Xi3 PISTON take up shelf space and collect dust? All will be revealed in due time.
