Puzzle Quest made match-3/RPG games quite popular, and Xenowars has taken this idea and swapped the RPG for a RTS. To be more specific, it swapped it with a 2D side-scrolling tower defense game.
There are quite a few of these types of games in the App Store, such as Galaxy Front and Ancient War to name a couple. But none of these games has players earn money, mana, and action points by matching 3 colored blocks. The end result is two different types of frenzy on both sides of the screen: frenzy of matching blocks as fast as possible and frenzy of ordering stick-figured troops into battle.
The other end result is that this game is crazy fun. Watching the stick figures carry hilarious weapons and wreak havoc on stick-figure werewolves and mummies is a laugh riot, and the constant color matching and minion summoning keeps the game from ever getting slow and dull.
The block puzzle also prevents the game from getting tedious. Players do not have time to sit back and watch and see if their army is doing well, because there is always mana and action points to collect. This could be either good or bad, because it is just as easy to overlook the failure of one's army. But as long as players keep a good rhythm going, this potential problem should not be a problem for long.
There is plenty to like in Xenowars. It has a puzzle, it has real-time strategy, it has stick figures carrying huge guns and swords, and it's only $.99. Don't think about this game or wait for a lite version. Just download and play.
