Southern California resident Xenia Martinez, hailing from San Diego’s sister city Temecula, brought down the house last night on NBC's The Voice covering Jesse J.'s Price Tag. Airing live for the first time on June 7, 2011, The Voice follows in American Idol's footsteps by featuring celebrity judges who pick teams of raw but talented hopefuls seeking a record deal. The judges, who are also coaches, blindly picked teams of 4 “voices” to prepare for live competition where America ultimately votes for their favorites. The show features celebrities Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Cee-lo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton (props to NBC for leaving out the has-beens and arrogant foreigners). Check out the teams at The Voice homepage.
Xenia, heading into her junior year at Great Oak High School completed her first live performance last night after being coached by Blake Shelton and his mentor, Reba McIntire. Team Blake was put against Christina Aguilara's four divas-in-training (Team Christina), and Xenia dazzled in her first live show performance as one of the only contestants dressed appropriately for her ripe young age of 16 (check out Team Christina for further reference). Her performance, though still a tad introverted, won the hearts of the crowd and the judges, all without coming dangerously close to a wardrobe malfunction (again, see Team Christina for further reference).
On Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Xenia and the rest of "Team Blake" will find out who was voted by America to stay on the team; Blake then decides from the remaining three team members who will have to go back to singing in the shower. To vote for Xenia to remain on the show, go to The Voice's official site and click on Xenia's video. All of the artist's performances are available for download on itunes as well at the Itunes Store for the Voice.
Keep your ears perked next week to see whether the meek but talented teen (who goes only by her first name on the Voice) will remain for round 2. The local competitor, whose unique voice is backed by ability to play piano, guitar, and harmonica by ear, certainly possesses the talent to take home the show's $100,000 prize and land a record deal. Watch a live replay of the show here at: The Voice quarterfinals Round 1.
