'XCOM: Enemy Unknown' revealed to take series back its strategy roots

Fans of the XCOM series were taken aback by 2K Games reimagining of the classic series as a first-person shooter at the 2010 E3. If you prefer your XCOM as a tactical strategy game though, not to worry. It was announced on Tuesday that strategy experts Firaxis Games is bringing XCOM: Enemy Unkonwn to the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this fall.

The reveal came as part of Game Informer's monthly cover reveal that featured XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The title is a dedicated strategy game that returns to the originals roots as players take command of a global anti-alien defense force in "mankind's last stand."

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Like the original, the game will feature a real-time strategic view along with turn-based combat, research, weapon upgrades and more. It will also add destructible environments which should open up new lines of strategy in the game. Though we wonder if there is any kind of negative impact from getting too destructive.

We'll find out more when the February issue of Game Informer hits. Until then, you can check out the full-sized cover in our slideshow gallery.
