All right guys. I probably should have done this one a lot sooner but it is a topic that most gamers do not want to breach for fear of jinxing. So your console has crashed. The XBOX has one of its variations of the red ring and today I’m going to try and give some troubleshooting tips that will save you from having to send your machine back to Microsoft and wait those agonizing weeks for its return.
So, the console’s status ring now shines three sides of red instead of green. The machine is having difficulty, usually due to a hardware issue. ‘The red ring of death’ can be caused by numerous factors. One is constantly marathon gaming, where the console is not given time to rest and power down. The heat circulating throughout the machine will cause certain inner components to shift out of place and cause the red lights. It could be the AC adapter, if it is left on the floor and not allowed proper ventilation. Dust and pet dander can find its way into the vents and block fan axels, causing the console to overheat and burnout. These dragging components will further tax the system which, after a while, will cause it to crash.
In case an XBOX 360 does develop the red ring, what can be done? There are several ways in which to solve and prevent this problem. The first is the easiest. Leave the machine in a place where it can get great ventilation and stays clear of a lot of dust, dirt, and pet dander. Now for those who are more tech savvy, the XBOX 360 can be dismantled in order to clean and repair what’s inside. The motherboard must then be carefully removed and the DVD drive taken out after unplugging all necessary wires. The X-clamps must be removed then and some gentle cleaning should do the trick. There was mention of a trick with wrapping the console in towels to allow the fibers in the towel to attract any dust or dirt that could have blocked any vents or fans. This technique was hit with mixed reviews as to whether or not it worked. If this is a trick you wish to try, get Microsoft for clear instructions.
Hope this helps. Until next time everyone.
