Unity boss misspeaks, tools not widely available until next year. Select studios getting early access testing this year.
The Unity tools for Xbox One, “will not be widely available” to studios until next year, Unity CEO, David Helgason told OXM in a correcting statement today. During an interview back in July, the executive insinuated that Xbox One Unity tools would be fully available sometime this year; when in actuality, only certain developers had access.
“I misspoke and suggested that Unity for Xbox One would be available sometime in 2013,” Helgason said in an email. “At that time, work had just begun on those tools so while there will be a very few developers in very early testing phases this year, the Xbox One tools for Unity will not be available to developers until 2014,” he corrects. “I apologize for any confusion my statement may have caused.”
That said, Unity has yet to announce any specific release date on the tools for Microsoft’s new console at this time.
In related news, when the XO Unity tools do launch, Microsoft plans give free Unity tool kits to specially approved Xbox One game developers. No more details are disclosed at this time.
The Xbox One is scheduled to release in NA and 13 other markets on November 22nd, 2013.
