In an "Ask Microsoft Anything" Q&A session at IGN, Xbox One Chief Platform Architect Marc Whitten revealed that the company expects the day one update to take between 15 and 20 minutes "for most users." While he did not give a file size, that is likely due to the fact that Microsoft is still finalizing everything the update will contain.
While the Wii U had a massive launch update that took many users an hour or more to download and install, Microsoft already has experience delivering updates quickly to the Xbox 360 and have the infrastructure in place to handle delivery.
As for how regular the Xbox One system will be updated, Microsoft will use the same bi-annual update schedule it currently uses for the Xbox 360. That means a system update in the spring and the fall.
The Xbox One launches on Nov. 22.
