Microsoft, makers of the Xbox One, are reporting a record-setting number for their new video game and entertainment console.

In an announcement on Dec. 11, Microsoft says they have sold more than 2 million Xbox One consoles worldwide during the first 18 days of the product's release.

“The Xbox One entertainment system is one of our hottest selling products this holiday season,” said Bob Puzon, senior vice president of Merchandising at GameStop said in the Microsoft statement. “GameStop is experiencing high demand from our customers for this innovative console and we are working closely with Microsoft to receive more units to fulfill our customers’ holiday shopping lists.”

These latest numbers put the Xbox One numbers on par with the sales numbers for rival product PlayStation 4. The new Sony console, that came out in the United States one week before the Xbox One's North American release, has sold a reported 2.1 million units according to video game sales tracker VGChartz.

Nintendo's Wii U, released a year before the new Microsoft and Sony console, still leads in overall sales of the new video game console generation with 4.4 million units worldwide. Analysts expect both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to quickly pass Nintendo's numbers as they continue to do battle for the top spot in the overall video game console war.
