When Microsoft first announced the Games with Gold program for the Xbox 360 at E3, it said that the program would only run through the end of the year. The program has been so successful though that the company announced Friday it is now a permanent fixture.
"[W]e’ve seen an overwhelming response, with more than 120 million hours played with Games with Gold titles," Microsoft announced on Xbox Wire. "Today, as a part of the 'Week of Xbox Live,' we’re excited to announce that we are making Games with Gold an ongoing benefit for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360."
Games with Gold currently offers two free games every month - one in the first half and one in the second. Halo 3 is the game currently offered as part of the promotion through Oct. 31.
The program was started in response to Sony's Playstation Plus program which offers a number of free games to download every month for the PS3 and PS Vita while the $50 a year subscription is still active. The difference with Microsoft's program is that only one game is available to download for free at a time but those that download a free title will still own it even if their Xbox LIVE Gold subscription ends.
There has been no announcement on if or when Games with Gold will be extended to the Xbox One.
