Philander Smith, Xavier of Louisiana and Voorhees received their first-round assignments for the NAIA Division I championship tournament set to start Wednesday at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
The NAIA tournament is the oldest postseason tournament in college basketball.
PSU (25-7), the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference champion, and Voorhees (22-11), winner of the Association of Independent Institutions tournament, will play Wednesday. XULA (24-7) received an at-large bid and will kick off their potential title run on Thursday.
Voorhees has the toughest beginning of the three schools. The Tigers must face Lee (29-3), the NAIA's third-ranked team, Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.
The Panthers of Philander Smith will then take on 13th-ranked Montana Western (22-9) at 2 p.m.
The winners of those games will face each other in the second round at a time to be announced.
Xavier won't begin until Thursday when the no. 16 Gold Rush tip off against no. 14 Faulkner at 9:45 p.m. Ironically, the Gold Nuggets will meet Faulkner earlier at 10:45 a.m.
Should XULA win, they will move to the next round to meet either Rocky Mountain or 2nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson.
