Every second Saturday of each month, Wynwood Art Walk, a community-wide event, is held in the Wynwood Art District. Showcasing more than 60 galleries, the area comes alive like a scene from Alice in Wonderland exploding with art, music, hipsters and groovy vibes at no cost to the explorer.
Graffiti clad walls with robots, tropical birds and cartoons are typically the backdrop to a local DJ’s music, impromptu drum circles, food trucks and hundreds of art enthusiasts walking the streets of Wynwood. If Andy Warhol’s 1960’s art studio “The Factory” made a child with the streets of Downtown Miami, the product would be today’s psychedelic Wynwood Art Walk.
The urban art, which is in constant flux, reflects the ever-evolving pulse of this cultural movement that has taken shift in Miami’s art community since its commencement. Today, tourists and locals alike flock to experience the fusion of Wynwood’s street art movement, eclectic scene and surrounding bars, as much as the galleries themselves.
All bars and clubs in the Wynwood Art Walk are located at 36th Street South to 20th Street and between NE 2nd Avenue and NW 6th Avenue. True to form, Wynwood’s nightlife is as varied as Lady Gaga’s wardrobe. There are no shortage of hipster happy bars in the area, but in order to avoid a night roaming Wynwood’s expansive bar and club offering, here are two must see destinations:
Wood Tavern is the ultimate bohemian backyard party. The atmospheric tea lights and graffiti tagged wood benches and walls match its equally carefree crowd. Its prices are moderate and they have a stocked bar serving what all the local art hippie’s are drinking. Wood Tavern is located at 2531 NW 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33127 and open Tuesday-Saturday at 5 p.m.-3 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.-9 p.m..
Shots Miami is Wynwood’s go-to spot for you guessed it, shots. Its succinct title adequately gets to the heart of what it does best; serve just about any shot imaginable in a number of creative ways. Its bartenders use everything from props to fire, and you don’t have to pay Miami’s notoriously high prices.
They also serve cocktails, craft beers and formula wines. However, when in Rome do as the Romans do, which in this case would be shots. Shots is located at 311 NW 23 St., Miami, Fl. 33127 and open Monday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday at 7 p.m.-5 a.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m.-5 a.m.
For the out of towner who prefers to peruse the streets of Wynwood with a guide, Wynwood Art Walk offers guided art walks every third Saturday of the month for a modest $15 a person. The next one hour guided tour of Wynwood will take place on Feb. 9, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance online.
