Wyclef Jean is ineligible as a candidate for president of Haiti. The New York Times reported late on Friday, August 20 that Haiti's electoral council announced that the Haitian-American hip hop star was on the list of candidates who are now disqualified and not allowed to run for president in the November 28 election.
For weeks, Wyclef Jean's name has been in and out of the Google trends with word of his desire to run for president of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The New York Times reports: No explanation was given. A council spokesman, Richardson Dumesle, simply read the list of 19 presidential aspirants deemed eligible and 15, including Mr. Jean, judged ineligible.
The media has speculated all day that Wyclef Jean would not be able to run for president of Haiti because he failed to meet the residency requirements required to run for the office. Candidates must be a resident of Haiti for five years prior to an the election.
A council member told Reuters Thursday that Jean did not meet several of the legal requirements to stand in the November election.
MSNBC: U.N. and Haitian police guarded the provisional electoral council headquarters in Port-au-Prince to prevent any trouble ... It was feared his exclusion and that of other contenders from the electoral race on legal grounds could stir political tensions and even possible violence.
