Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean, a native of Haiti, took to his Twitter to ask for donations to help his homeland after a devastating 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday.
The former Fugees star is urging people to donate $5 to his Haitian charity, Yéle Haiti, by texting "YELE" to 501501. The donation will then be automatically charged to your cellphone bill. International donations can be made through the Yéle Haiti website, which has crashed several times due to a huge volume of traffic.
"I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse," said Jean in a statement posted on his website. "We must act now... Haiti needs your prayers and support."
Wyclef tweeted early Wednesday that he was on his way to the Dominican Republic "to get to haiti."
The Haitian Prime Minister said he believed the death toll from the earthquake would be in the hundreds of thousands, which would make it one of the most deadliest natural disasters in history.
The American Red Cross is deploying six diaster-management spokesmen to aid in relief efforts in Haiti. American Red Cross spokesperson Brigette Williams told LIttle Rock's KTHV: "We are receiving numerous calls from Arkansans who want to help. The best way is financial donations to provide services specific to the needs of the Haitian disaster. This response is vast with mumerous immediate needs."
Arkansans who want to help can also make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Cell phone users can also make a $10 donation by texting the word "Haiti" to 90999.
