Wyclef Jean dodges bullet shooting in Haiti

Wyclef Jean was shot in Haiti on Sunday, dodging what could have been a fatal bullet, according to the musician's reps. Stepping out of a car in his homeland, Jean says the bullet ricocheted off his hand but reps for the New Jersey hip-hop star say he's doing fine.

According to the report, the 41-year-old Jean said the bullet and attempted shooting "grazed" his right hand after he "heard blow, blow, blow." From there, Wyclef says he "just looked at his hand," absorping the shock of the shooting.

JEAN'S PRESIDENTIAL SUPPORT FOR MARTELLY CAUSES DISSENT

After being denied eligibility to run as president  due to residency requirements in fall 2010, Wyclef has since supported the election run of his friend and music comrade, presidential hopeful Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly. The election, and Wyclef's unwavering support for Martelly, has created ongoing riots, namely the first-round presidential results in December which, when announced, caused enough uproar to shut down Haiti's capital.

Jean received medical attention immediately after the shooting in Haiti and was escorted to a local hospital and quickly released after treatment. Protected in an "undisclosed location," according to reports, Jean says he's on antibiotics and will recover in time.

WYCLEF PLANS TO STILL VOTE AFTER SHOOTING

Shooting Wyclef in Haiti won't deter the musician's commitment to his drive for a better Haiti. On the phone with the AP after the shooting, Jean said he plans to press forward with his civil duties and support for Martelly's run in the Haiti election. Next stop for Wyclef? Casting his vote.

WYCLEF SAYS HAITI'S OPPORTUNITY FOR BETTERMENT IS "NOW"

"Haiti has an opportunity now to start from scratch, and what that means is, we can get real schools in there, there's a chance of getting real hospitals, of teaching a population how to read and write, where kids can get a degree, and actually do something with the degree right now," Wyclef said in a July 2010 interview with Esquire magazine. "As far as investment and business, this is the best time to invest in business in Haiti.
